MTM A1 Nardo
15.06.2012

This year sport auto readers had the pleasure rather than pain of making a choice from more than 250 sporty cars. Of the total of 25 categories, 15 were assigned to standard production sports cars, while the remaining ten categories were all about tuning for fame and glory. And the sport auto readers clearly spoke their minds: MTM, the high-tech studio from Wettstetten on the outskirts of Ingolstadt, Germany qualified three times with a “podium position”: In the category for tuned cabriolets above the price limit of 80,000 Euro, the learned readers placed the MTM Audi R8 Spyder in 3rd position. Beaten by a whisker, the MTM Audi RS3 Sportback won second place in the category of tuned limousines under 80,000 Euro.

The undisputed champion of tuned compact cars was the MTM Audi A1 Nardo. The performance that the compact Audi demonstrated in the previous year on the track of the high speed oval in Nardo, southern Italy, was overwhelming: In the capable hands of Roland Mayer, the proprietor and Managing Director of MTM, the meaty compact car laid down a top speed of 324.02 km/h. The values attained on this occasion on the way to the top speed are just as impressive: From zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, only 14 seconds from a standstill to 200 km/h and not even 39 seconds to reach 300 km/h.

“Power Mayer” owes this speed to his 2.5 liter TFSI powerhouse which at 6,900 rpm supplies a small matter of 500 PS (368 kW). At 4,400 rpm the maximum torque of 600 Nm is available. A specially tuned exhaust turbocharger with intercooler selectively exerts pressure and is part of the reason for the virtually turbine-like power pick-up. However, the power is not uncurbed: On the front axle, internally ventilated, semi-perforated disks size 376 x 32 mm are waiting for the teeth of the brake calipers to bite down with the power from eight pistons to slow down spectacularly. Spectacular also because the hard braking work takes place hidden behind particularly attractive Bimoto rims (8.5 x 19″), fitted with Michelin Super-Sport tires (235/30 ZR 19).
